If you are planning a trip to Washington, D.C., and wondering what to do on your trip, know that the nations’ capital can boast a plethora of fascinating monuments, government buildings and excellent museums.

D.C is in fact one of the most affordable vacation destinations in the U.S. It's not hard to find reasonably priced flights to D.C., and many of ‘The District’s’ major attractions charge no admission.

For a great vacation, make sure you have a plan before you visit. Its a good idea to locate yourself in the East End of D.C. That way you are close to all of the capital’s biggest attractions. Also make sure your D.C hotel is close to a Metro stop. D.C. has an excellent public transport system and you can reach all parts of the capital by using the Metro.

Here are some ideas for what to get up to on your vacation in Washington, D.C.

1. Madame Tussaud's, Washington D.C.
Everyone loves a visit to Madame Tussaud's, the famous wax museum, and the one in Washington D.C. will not disappoint. The statues are so lifelike it's like you’re encountering the real person. You will find a wax facsimile of every U.S president as well as some fictional characters like Jack Sparrow from the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies. Tickets for Madame Tussaud's are $21 for adults and $16 for children. If you purchase them online you can enjoy a 15% discount.

2. Bike and Roll
If you are visiting the D.C. area between the months of mid-March through mid-December, you may want to head out on a bike tour with Bike and Roll. These tours depart throughout the day and will take you to all the sights while providing you with commentary about D.C’s fascinating history. You will cycle to the National Mall, Capitol Hill, as well as tour Alexandria or Mount Vernon. There are also night bike tours of D.C. If you are in the D.C. area during the cherry blossom season, a bike tour is the perfect way to take in the beauty of this springtime event. Tours start at $40 for adults.

3. National Museum of Crime & Punishment
Do you love a good crime story? If you enjoy TV shows like ‘America's Most Wanted’ or ‘CSI’, you should check out the National Museum of Crime & Punishment. There is a crime lab in the museum, a shooting range, and great information on some of the most infamous crimes in American history. Tickets at the gate are $21.95 for adults and $14.95 for children. Adults can save $3 per ticket by buying them online.

4. The National Zoo
To top off your time in D.C., head to the National Zoo. Not only are the animals fun to observe, but as the Zoo is part of the Smithsonian Institution, admission is free! One the big attractions at the zoo is the panda exhibit. The exhibit started 40 years ago with a gift of two pandas from the People’s Republic of China. Today, the National Zoo plays a pivotal role in protecting this species.

Planning a trip to D.C. is fun and exciting. Find your cheap flights to DC so that you can spend more on attractions when you get there.
